Whenever an organisation is in trouble, the starts talking about the sales team that is not performing. In turn the sales team gets so nervous that their creativity starts to fly out the window and they start to battle to get new business in. That sounds a bit like a catch 22 situation, doesn’t it?
The reality of the situation is that there could be so many reasons why the sales people are not performing like expected. Maybe the market or industry is just a bit dead at the moment? Maybe times are tough, nobody is buying since people don’t have money? Or even worse, maybe the company’s reputation has resulted in the competition getting the sales?
Now, as the owner of the business, what do you do? Do you replace the sales team? Do they need motivation? Do you need to discount your product? Do you need to introduce new products/services? What if you increase their commission structures so that they are more driven to bring in the sales? Or decrease their salaries (that will also motivate them to earn more commission). What you can’t understand is that this was the sales team that did so well in the past? What could have gone wrong?
The simple answer to all of those questions is: (wait for it…) NO, NONE of the above! Okay, now your mind immediately jumps to new questions, right? Some of those questions might be: Should I do more marketing? Should I do more research? Should I perhaps change the way that we approach sales? Should I look at history and see what worked before and why its not working now? How about finding out what the competition is doing?
Again, the simple answer to all of those questions is: (drum roll…) YES, ALL of the above and even more! Even more, you ask? Yes, even more. Because what worked in the past might not be working anymore. Maybe your sales team needs to go back to the basics again and then jump to NEW ways of doing things from there! Maybe they need training on technology, they might even have to be re-introduced to your vision, mission and culture statements. Maybe the way they are managed needs to be sharpen up. It might even be that they are not willing to change their way of doing things. And this is costing YOUR business to lose revenue. But you don’t have money to do any of these things, it is already a business in trouble?
Sounds scary? Here is an idea that will then let you gasp for air. Maybe YOU need to be couched (with your team) on how to turn this situation around. Now I can see your face dropping in my mind’s eye. You can’t afford coaching? It is costly? It will take a year to get out of the mess you are in, even if you do have a business couch? What if a Business coach can assist your team to increase the revenue and of course, the profits? What if a Business couch pays for himself/herself by growing your business to be highly profitable? So basically, their results pay their own bills? What if your business becomes a top performing business due to the investment that you made into a Business couch?
My question to you: what do you have to lose? I have the answer to that for you. This answer is going to shake you out of your socks. YOUR BUSINESS. That is what you have to lose if you DON’T get a Business Coach in to turn the situation around! What is even worse, you would have to let go of the whole staff compliment then (not only the sales team), you would probably not be able to pay their severance packages, you will sit with overdrawn accounts, you would have to either find another business opportunity (if you can afford it) or find a job for yourself elsewhere. Get the picture?
